Kerry James Marshall is an American artist and professor known for his paintings of Black figures. He previously taught painting at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2017, Marshall was included on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
So, for my artists out there, who still gesso their painting surfaces even if they come preprimed?
Due to how I work, with multiple layers of paint. Acrylic underlays with an oil overlay, I really don't need to do this. But I'm old school and believe in starting with a strong foundation.

Interesting coincidence that the name of this song is SELAH, and that's also the title of this painting. This painting that I created while reflecting the past. Events, places, and people I've lost and the uncertainty of the present.
SELAH is defined as "a pause." During turbulent times, mental or physical, of our own doing, or external forces beyond our control. We must SELAH, find our peace so we can regroup, and continue to fight the good fight.
Life isn't easy, but I find solace in looking at the past, seeing those that crawled and walked so we could run, and there's no way I'm dropping the baton that they've handed to me.
